Question 3.3 Explain how disability may affect development:
In the UK you’re disabled under the Equality Act 2010 if you have a physical or mental impairment that has a ‘substantial’ and ‘long-term’ negative effect on your ability to do normal daily activities. There are also many models of disability; the social model is a civil based approach and considers society rather than the individual to be the problem. The approach was developed by disabled people in the 70’s and 80’s and was justifiably critical of how society. There were many issues that disabled people were confronted with buildings and information were not accessible and attitudes and negative stereotypes prevented disabled people from having equal access to opportunities and services. Services that were set up specifically for disabled people only compounded the segregation and marginalisation they experienced. A disabled person now has full civil rights under law.
The medical model also hindered disabled people as they were defined in terms of their medical background or illness and therefore also lacked control or a voice over what happened to them, choices were made for them by “professionals”.
