In the realm of Education, no matter what field of expertise you are engaged in there are several important regulatory requirements that need to be addressed, and adhered to, a good understanding of them is essential to the well-being of a facilitator and students a like, they are split into three main categories
Legislative requirement A duty to act according to the law as defined in an Act of Parliament and usually enforceable through the courts:.
Code of Practice: A set of rules outlining how a person in a particular profession or situation is expected to behave.
Statutory code of practice: A Code of Practice approved by Parliament and admissible as evidence in any legal action.
My expertise Iies in the field of outdoor education and requires me to have a understanding of current legislation, policies and procedures, these procedures are put in place to protect and give guidelines when delivering outdoor sessions, an example a breach in the law, would be practicing without the correct qualification, would be considered a crime.
Relevant Legislation
HSE
AALA
CRB
To enable instructors and teachers to deliver and act responsibly when delivering a lesson, their needs to be some kind rules set out to give guidelines and direction, this is were the code of practise is essential, some of the practises that are relevant in my line of work and not followed in other professions are::
Firstly students and staff must wear helmets at all times when participating in a climbing or abseiling session, even when not involved in climbing, these student or staff could be just viewing from the bottom of a cliff, this insures that if the active person dislodges a rock which falls to the ground you are protected, secondly rope practises, ensure the correct knots, anchoring techniques and safety procedures are put in place and adhered to.
I believe to be a good instructor you must have a good understanding of the roles and responsibilities, there are several I consider to be very important.
Firstly: And I deem the most important an instructor must have a complete and solid understanding of the subject matter, in my field, one little mistake could lead to a serious injury.
Secondly: Communication and listening are very high on the list, instructors needs to be able to communicate in a clear, precise, confident and calm way what actions they want a student to follow, .
Thirdly To be prompt, motivated and enthusiastic at all times in the most dire of weather conditions, on the odd occasion I have observed instructors who have not appeared to look happy, which can spread through a group and cause havoc, as we instructors say “there is no such thing as bad weather just inappropriate gear”
As well as being a good role model, t is the instructors responsabilty to look after the well being of the students, like ensuring the correct clothing boots are worn, safety equipment is used properly, all of this creates a happy and safe envioroment were students can bloom, learn enjoy there skills
The Teaching Cycle:
The teaching/ training cycle is a tool which can be used to help with teaching and training and has five basic elements; they are split into catogories which include, identifying needs plan and design, deliver, assess and evaluate the course, which has or will be delivered.
This cycle is ongoing and it is ever evolving, through out the programme. The initial assessment of the group and its individual needs are very important, and should be ongoing through out the programme. The cycle progresses slowly through all its stages, and it enables the instructor/teacher and the student to progress through various stages.
Once the needs have been evaluated these could be social, physical, intellectual, cultural or emotional), we then have to put together a plan of action of what we want our students to learn and how we intend to structure and implement insuring at the same time that everyone has the same opportunities, in
