Assignment 1
Q1 Describe how you might contribute to a lesson given to a group of seven year old children learning to play percussion instruments.
My contribution to a percussion lesson would be, to make sure the instruments are ready and the classroom ready with plenty of room, also any hand outs printed and ready to give out. I would help the teacher with teaching the beat by counting with the children, then by clapping the beat with them and getting the children to copy, help explain to them that they need to watch and listen to each other to make sure they stay in time, if any of the children are unsure or struggling to keep in time with the beat I would help them by counting with them and clapping more on a one to one basis until they are happy and are keeping up with the rest of the class. As soon as the children understand what they are to do then we will give out cards with different notes on so they can make up their own beat which they can clap out first then get the instruments out, we will then show the children how to use them properly, then help if they get stuck or if they are unsure what to do, any children that would like to show the rest of the class what they have put together would be able to do so at the end of the lesson, and the rest of the children will be asked to stay quiet while they play their piece of music.
Q2 What might your role be in organising, using and maintaining the learning resources, materials and equipment for the percussion lesson?
My role would involve preparing the resources before they are required which will involve checking the instruments for damages and quantity to make sure there are enough for all the children, any damages or shortages in the equipment will be reported to the teacher and repaired if and where possible. Also making sure the classroom has suitable space for the lesson. Getting any additional resources ready, which may need to be photocopied, and any tapes or videos ready. I would also make sure the children know how to use the instruments in the proper way so to prevent damage to the instruments or injury to the children, also make sure they know where the instruments go after they have finished their lesson.
Q3 Describe how you would act in class in order to be an effective role model for the standards of behaviour expected in pupils.
I would be consistent and treat every child as individuals as no two children are the same, I would never criticise a child’s work I would try and explain another way to approach the work. I would praise correction and encourage them to push themselves and to help them build self-esteem and give them confidence. I would make sure I show respect to the teacher and the children and listen to their needs and preserving their dignity. I would encourage pupils to work together where possible and to listen to others opinion’s, to sit quietly when someone else is talking and to show respect to others, always be easy to approach and to talk to never be too busy to listen, always use appropriate language, make sure my work area is always kept tidy and organised.
Q4 What strategies might you employ to encourage pupils to behave appropriately? Describe how you might react to incidents of bullying or violence.
To encourage good behaviour in pupils I would make sure they know what is unacceptable behaviour and that offensive language is not tolerated, I would always make sure the way I act and speak is polite and courteous at all times to pupils and other members of staff. I would make sure they understand the policies of the school and what the consequences of their actions will be. When dealing with any forms of bullying my response would be the same, I would calm the situation down by speaking to them and not raising my voice and then I would escort the children involved somewhere where they can talk to me without being interrupted by any other pupils, but also
