Joan Miro i Ferra born April 20, 1893 and past in December 25, 1983. He was a world renowned Spanish Catalan painter, sculptor, and ceramist who was born in the sea port city of
Barcelona. His father being a locksmith and his mother being a goldsmith exposed him to art at young age. Drawing have been recovered by Miro from when he was only 8 years old (1901). He enrolled into the School of Industrial and Fine Arts in Barcelona until 1910; during his attendance he was taught by Modest Urgell and Josep Pasco. In 1911 he overcame a fight against typhoid fever and after that he decided to devoted himself to painting by attending the school of art taught by Francesc Gali. He then studied at La Lonja School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and in 1918 set up his first individual exhibition in the Dalmau Galleries, in the city. His works before 1920 reflect the influence of different trends, like pure and brilliant colors used in Fauvism, shapes taken from cubism, influences from folkloric Catalan art and Roman frescos from the churches. Through his time he created highlight pieces such as the two ceramic murals made for the UNESCO building in Paris (The Wall of the Moon & The Wall of the
Sun).
