A. Describe the four areas of emphasis in art education: dance, music, theater, and visual arts.

Dance is a physical form of art that can be taught to students. There are several advantages to learning dance: flexibility, endurance, coordination, motor skills, and even creative thinking. The center for Educator Development in Fine Arts states,” Dance involves a way of knowing that is intellectual and physical, intuitive and rational. When people create, perform or respond to dance, they engage in acts of observation, analysis, reflection, synthesis, inspiration, creation, transformation, interpretation, application and evaluation. An education without dance is an education that denies children and adults crucial tools for responding to the complexities of contemporary life"(Deasy).

Music is another form of art that can be taught to students. Music can be taught in many different forms. A student can learn how to play an instrument, how to read music and how to sing. Music can help develop math skills and can create discipline in a student’s life. Learning something like playing an instrument takes time and effort, which helps students to learn patience as well.

Theater is a form of art that can also be taught to students. Theater is a great way for students to learn how to express themselves and their feelings. By learning how to express all different kinds of emotions students can learn how to harness or let out the emotions at appropriate times. According to META (Multicultural Educational Theater Arts) performing arts help a child to gain confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline, the ability to organize and prioritize, self-reliance, poise and the ability to converse with adults (Lynn).

Visual arts is yet another form of art that should be taught to students. “The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not deny the limits of our cognition”(NaeA). Visual arts also help bring out the creative side in a student.
