The author of this article gave the definition of body image as a subjective concept of one’s physical appearance based on self-observation and the reaction of others. There are problems with this definition that I will talk about later on in this article summary. The article tried to cover the history of the perceived body image in the United States dating all the way back to the 1900’s. The Girl Scouts of America did a study recently and found that 59% of girls were dissatisfied with their body shape; 66% wanted to lose weight; 66% correctly identified themselves as being either normal weight or overweight; and 33% had a correct image about their weight. Another study showed that Caucasian females had greater body dissatisfaction than African American females. Even with all of the dissatisfaction with their body image, Americans are still heavier than ever right now. More than 66% of adults in the United States are overweight, and more than 32% are obese. One reason that young girls are dissatisfied with their weight and body image is because of the toys that they play with. Girls and even some guys play with Barbie dolls and GI Joe figures that have the perfect body appearance. Seeing this makes the young children want to grow up to be like them. When they grow and see that they are not like the Barbie dolls they become dissatisfied. Another aspect of everyday life causing body dissatisfaction would be

to study Week 1, Day 1 You can use either Cliffs AP Biology 3rd Edition or Barron’s AP Biology. I personally used only Cliffs AP Biology 3rd edition. Using both would be best, but it is not necessary. I don’t recommend the 4th edition of AP Cliffs Biology, it was updated to eliminate much of the information in accordance with the new AP biology exam. ☐ Read AP Cliffs Ch. 1 “Chemistry” takes notes and memorize it ☐ Read AP Barron’s Biology Ch. 3 “Biochemistry” (notes are online on the dat bootcamp…
John Jay High School AP Biology Summer 2013 Dear Future AP Biology Students: Welcome to AP Biology! It is hard to imagine that the school year is coming to a close and it is time to think about the 2013-14 school year. We are looking forward to another great year of AP Biology with another fantastic group of students. As you may know, there are some changes to the AP Biology program for 2013-2014, and we are ready! AP Biology is a challenging but very rewarding course and we will have…
SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY – by Mialy Rabe Synthetic biology or SynBio is an emergent scientific/technological topic that has a tremendous over increase in social media and networks past 9/11. Jonathan Tucker and Raymond Zlinsklas, in The Promise and Perils of Synthetic Biology defined it as the “redesign of natural biological systems for greater efficiency. It is as well the construction of “genetic circuits” and metabolic pathways for practical purposes”. “Synthetic genomics” refers to the laboratory synthesis…

RESEARCH AND DECIDE Jonathan Pallas Biology 10 Mr. Gindorff 10/2/14 Abstract A number of advances in scientific disciplines in the past can be directly linked to advances in technology that support those fields. What about the science of ecology? How has ecological theory and practice been enhanced by advances in technology? The science of ecology is so broad that advances in other disciplines often directly benefit ecological research techniques, including the development of biotechnology…

On Monday, John Tierney of the New York Times published a provocative article, "Daring to Discuss Women in Science" in which he argues that biology may be a factor to explain why women are not reaching high-level positions. He suggests that boys are innately more gifted at math and science and that the dearth of women in science may point to simple biological differences. If this is the case, why would we waste our time trying to get more women in science? Mr. Tierney, let's indeed discuss women…
If I asked you to find a definition for “science” you would probably find something similar to the listing above. As biology majors, you will spend the next several years learning “science” (definition 2) so you can practice “science” (definition 3) as a career. An important aspect of all the sciences is the application of the scientific method. Observations are made, questions are asked, hypotheses are developed, experiments are performed, data are collected, and conclusions are drawn. These…
