The article I read was about a sex super bug that has been discovered in Hawaii and has been said to have been feared to be more infectious than AIDS’. The disease is a strain of gonorrhea. “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has asked Congress for $50 million to find a new antibiotic to treat the drug-resistant strain of the disease” (Unknown, 2013). The disease was first discovered in United States in May of 2011 but it was first discovered in the world in Japan (Unknown, 2013). The first overall discovery was also in 2011. The disease spread from Japan to Hawaii. It has also made its way to California and Norway. This disease presents as gonorrhea but it is being considered to be as deadly as the AIDS virus. I thought it was interesting to learn how the disease was tracked. I never really considered the importance of the way a disease was spread. However, I can see why it would be important to know where is started and the path that it was spread by. It could even allow people to trace the disease to an exact person. In North America, gonorrhea is the second most common sexually transmitted disease that is reported. This particular strain of the disease can cause people to go into septic shock and it might cause death in only a few days (Unknown, 2013). This was something that I found interesting because I did not know that gonorrhea was the second most common sexually transmitted disease in North America. The disease is being called HO41 and congress is being asked for nearly $54 million dollars to immediately help to fund for an antibiotic as well as education for people and to create public awareness. It is most important that people know what is going on around them so that they can take extra precautions in regards to their health. The article did not provide a plan that would be put into place as far as a treatment. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did ask Congress for $50 million so that they can find a new antibiotic that will take care of the disease.
