When one thinks of the word milk, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Most people will immediately think of a cow or a tall glass full of that cold, refreshing liquid. More and more people are beginning to picture an almond, a soybean, or for some, rice. The public is swinging away from good old Bessie providing them a refreshing glass and turning to an almond instead. Some people make the switch because to a plant-based “milk” for health reasons or otherwise. There exists just one major problem with that shift. Labeling those fakers “milk” is confusing to consumers. This confusion has caused a drop of over one billion dollars in the milk market in the last five years (Prescott). Plant-based “milks” should not be called milk because they differ from real milk in definition, composition, and nutritional value. To ensure that all food manufacturers in the United States are packaging safely and correctly, the federal government established the Food and Drug Administration. They have guidelines and regulations for every kind of food there is that is made in the US. What the FDA defines a food as and says about a food is what that food is, the definition is the law.
