Stereotyping Mormons Many people have fixed notions about the Mormon religion, which is based out of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Every so often I get asked a curious question by someone assuming what he or she has heard is true. When I respond and answer these questions or comments, some are surprised to find out what they have heard is in fact, not true. All religions are judged, stereotyped, or labeled but with the Mormon religion, I have had personal experience. I have grown up in the LDS church, causing me to inevitably believe all of what I am taught. Just like any religion there comes a point where the people of that religion are encouraged to find the truth for themselves. Whether that be through prayer, research, or any other way. Everyone must believe it for themselves to fully come to understand what they are being taught, no matter the religion or church. I have had the opportunity to be introduced to this specific religion at very young age. A lot of people around the world may not be exposed to or have the chance to experience any religion or gospel teaching. Granted, those that are part of a religion can educate those who may be curious to learn. Religion is not for everyone, and that is a personal choice that anyone is entitled to. Due to the rumors I have been asked about in the past, this has caused me to do a little more research and investigating on my own to learn more about the Mormon religion and what my church is all about. One question members of the church are often asked is, “Can you marry more than more person”, aka can you practice polygamy. The answer to this is no. Member of the church do not believe in practicing polygamy. In the Doctrine and Covenants verse 16 from the Bible it states, “Wherefore, it is lawful that he should have one wife, and they twain shall be one flesh, and all this that the earth might answer the end of its creation”. In the bible it consistently commands that marriage is between a man and a woman, that we shall replenish the earth, and become one in marriage. Another common question asked is, “So you pay money to your church?”. This is partially correct. Otherwise known as tithing. Each paycheck you earn, you are encouraged to donate 10% of the earning toward funds for the church. This money could go toward constructing of temples and buildings, helping fund the missionary program, work done in the temple, etc. Our leaders of the church are not paid and they also have no input on how the tithing is used. An assumption that Mormons are racist is also another rumor floating around. This is definitely not true. Granted, there are some racist people who could be also a member of the church, just like there are people who are racist around world. I have never met a racist person, especially within my church. In 2nd Nephi chapter 26 verse 33 it is said, “[The Lord] denieth none
