Discuss the relationship between Human Rights and development. How might both Human Rights imperatives and development imperatives be achieved without either being compromised?

This essay will attempt to discuss the Human Rights in South Africa alongside development, and tie them together in order to help us understand what the rights are and how it can be achieved without being changed or compromised. In order to help you understand, we must first discuss the rights that these people have to healthcare. Like all countries, every person has a right to Healthcare and Medicine, the question is - to what extent do they need the services? The world today, allows any which person to walk into a hospital or clinic and be checked up immediately or with an appointment and be prescribed with the medicine that they need.

In the South African Constitution, a 7 chapter whole document, and in the second chapter of this document - it speaks of the rights of the people and health care,

“27. Health care, food, water and social security
Everyone has the right to have access to ­ health care services, including reproductive health care; sufficient food and water; and social security, including, if they are unable to support themselves and their dependants, appropriate social assistance.
The state must take reasonable legislative and other measures, within its available resources, to achieve the progressive realisation of each of these rights.
No one may be refused emergency medical treatment.”
