Apple sweatshop scandal date: 24/03/2015-present

Intro ex #1: Apple has always been a very successful company. It’s a very popular corporation and with it has a high demand. How do they keep up with these high demands? Sweatshops.

Intro ex #2: While many of us are eager to receive the next generation of iPhones and iPads and iMacs, the builders of these products aren’t (as eagers?). Imagine working in such terrible conditions that you would rather die than keep working. That is the state that many of the apple workers are in.

Inside the sweatshop: the workers are paid £1.12 ( or 70 cents in Canada)
The salary is so low that they only earn 120 per year. It would require at least two months of work to even buy the cheapest apple product.
There has been 18 suicides in the factories as of 2010. There have been all around the world but mostly in china ( an approximate 9 people have died in the chinese companies). the industry in Foxconn City plant in Shenzhen, China let visitors come in.
The managers are so strict to the employees that they don’t even permit them to have time to think, they are constantly working.
Although many chinese people know about the terrible conditions, up to 3000 people have applied in 2013 to work in the factory. They state that even though it’s terrible, it’s better than most factories.
The suicides:
Imagine working in such terrible conditions that you would rather jump to your death then keep working.
As of 2010, 18 people have committed suicide, by jumping off the roof of the factory.
Instead of trying to fix the work conditions and policies, the factory installed suicide nets as to stop there workers from plummeting to their death.

Example of problems: many workers do not receive overtime pay even though they work for many hours. Many are forced to work 70 hours a week with no overtime pay.
There are exposed constantly to dangerous working conditions. Some have reported to working with dangerous toxic gases that they use to clean iphone screen.
Some factories don’t pay their workers with “work injury insurance” and other insurances required by law.
