Write a summary of 350-700 words identifying the contributions of Freud, Jung, and Rogers.
When talking about Freud, Jung, and Rogers you are talking about the theories of personality and the different views in which they had on the subject of what makes up an individual’s personality. When you look at the people around you and see their individual personalities you can see that there are different things that make up the personality because there are no two personalities that are the same. Freud who was known for his influence in psychodynamic theories stated that the individual’s personality is influenced by not only the unconscious mind but also from their childhood experiences. Freud believed that there is three parts to the personality, and that each one of those parts is responsible for a different part of the personality. Freud said that the id is responsible for all needs and urges, the superego is in charge of the ideals and morals, and finally the ego part of the personality moderates the demands between the id and the superego. Carl Rogers on the other hand stated that free will and experiences are what develops personality. They believed that self-actualization was needed for personal growth and to motivate behavior. Jung believed that the unconscious is what the ego used as a source of strength and vitality. He also believed that the unconscious was made up of the personal unconscious as well as the collective unconscious. The collective unconscious holds the memories as well as the behavior patterns that are inherited from past generations and are said to be shared by all humans. Jung felt that specific archetypes played a special role in shaping an individual’s personality. The persona being the element of our personality that we project to other people. Jung also believed that people themselves could be divided into two general attitude types, introverts and extroverts. Extroverts pay more attention to the external world around them and what is going on to the people around them, and introverts are more caught up in their own lives and what is going on in their own little world rather than the world around them.
