Rachel Carson uses Patterns of Organization, Sentence Structure, and Language to support her claim: Persuade Americans to change their attitude about agricultural practice and how to deal with insects and animals eating their crops. Carson uses her logic by saying “The results probably gratified the farmers, for the casualty list including some 65,000 red-winged blackbirds and starlings” (23-25). This fact allows the reader to think about how many birds and insects were actually killed and may change their mind about how they deal with animals and insects eating their crops. Before Carson goes any farther, she defines the word that she will use constantly; Parathion. Carson describes Parathion as “a universal killer” (27-28). Not only does Rachel Carson use Organization as a technique in her essay, but she also uses Sentence Structure and Sentence Variety. She uses simple sentences to state something important before she elaborates on it. For example, she says “There is a growing trend toward aerial applications of such deadly poisons as parathion to “control” concentrations of birds distasteful to farmers” (5-8). Also, rhetorical questions play a big role in getting the reader to think, and providing information in a different way. An example is in lines 48-51 when she “asks” “Who has made the decision that set in motion these chains of poisonings, this ever-widening wave of death that spreads out, like pebbles when dropped into a pond of still water”? Language also makes the essay easier to read and more powerful. Using techniques such as figurative language is important in writing a good essay. Carson uses a simile in lines 48-51 in her rhetorical question “Who has made the decision that set in motion these chains of poisonings, this ever-widening wave of death that spreads out, like pebbles when dropped into a pond of still water”? The underlined part is the simile. A simile is a comparison between two different thinks while using the words like or as. “Yet at so fearful a risk the farmers, with none to hinder them, waged their needless war on blackbirds” (44-46). The last quote was an example of a hyperbole (an exaggeration). The hyperbole makes it seem like this problem is so wrong where as in reality, it is just an exaggeration. In conclusion Rachel Carson writes this essay with the intention to educate the reader and persuade them to change their agricultural practice as she uses Patterns of Organization, Sentence Structure, and Language. Sophocles’s 4th century BC play, Antigone, the concept of the Golden Mean plays an important role. The Golden Mean can be defined as a moderate position between two extremes. The main female character, Antigone, demonstrates the inability to find that moderate position or balance and demonstrates excessiveness.
Antigone learns that both of her brothers are dead, Polynesis and Eteocles. Creon ordered Eteocles to be buried with hono and for Polynecis was to rot. In other words, Creon issued a royal edict banning the burial of Polynices, who he believes was a traitor. Antigone cannot bear leaving her one brother to rot so, being her rash self, defies the law, buries her brother, and gets caught. Unfortunatly, Antigone does get caught and is sentenced to torture. In this case her torture was to be fed barely any food. However, before
