Summarize:
In the article, “One Student's Narrated Story of Invisibility and Struggle,” Min Hua Hsieh argues that Li-Ling, a Chinese female international student, always keeps silent in his American class, so Li-Ling is attributed to a negative identity by her classmates. Hsieh think Li-Ling is a victim of the disempowering American higher educational setting. First, Li-Ling narrated that she is the only international student in her class, and her American classmates always ignore her. Li-Ling felt that she was isolated in the class. Second, Hsieh points out that American society generally values assertiveness and considers keeping silent an indication of incompetence or ignorance. To avoid being assigned a deficient identity, international students should be more assertive and expressive. Thirdly, the paper gave a suggestion that educators of American higher education should make several specific measures to afford a flexible setting for international students to let them feel more comfortable to participating in group projects and discussions.

Compared with other 5 sources, the article focuses on that higher education setting give a big effect on international students. The intended audience is international students who study in American colleges and educators of American higher education because the article is from College Student Journal. Next, the author uses strong ethos to influence the intended audience: The author is an expert of higher education who works as an associate professor at the National Taichung Institute of Technology in Taiwan. The author cites and lists 29 professional literatures in his reference. Then, the author uses strong pathos when he records Li-Ling’s interview, and the pathos effectively expresses that Li-Ling is extremely unsatisfied with her American classmate’s ignorance in group discussions. For example, “I am not stupid”, “the situation makes me useless”, The author records that Li-Ling said the word “stupid” “useless” at least 30 times in the context of the interview. The words give the audience, Educators of high education, a deep impression to urge them to think how to make measures for international students to improve the high education setting. The article is helpful to me and fits into my paper-4. After researching the article, I am thinking that my claim 1 in paper-4 would be that in culture and setting, international students should become accustomed to American society as soon as possible. My first minor detail of claim 1 would be that international students should make the opportunities to speak or express themselves in class so that they are considered competent and accepted by American students.
