Angry God! Jonathan Edwards appeals to emotion through imagery, simile, and metaphor to persuade his congregation to repent. I’m going to explain to you how Jonathan Edwards convinced his congregation to repent. Jonathan Edwards is very persuasive through his imagery in his sermon. He uses saying like “crush a worm that we see crawling on the earth.” He also explains that God is angry and with many and the people should fear the flames of hell. “God does not let loose of the hands and cut them off” is another example of God being angry. Jonathan Edwards persuades the congregations by making them scared or have fear of going to hell. He makes hell seem like the scariest place to ever go. In my opinion from what Jonathan Edwards has said in his sermon I’m terrified of hell and I would do anything to repent and get my life back on track. The images he has planted in my head scares the living crap out of me. Jonathan Edwards definitely had to change the congregations mind just by putting the images of hell in there head. Jonathan Edwards persuades his congregation by using simile. He compares a lot of things using like or as. Jonathan Edwards says “Gods anger is as great towards them as to those that are actually suffering the executions of the fierceness of his wrath in hell.” Jonathan Edwards says things like this to compare them. Jonathan try’s really hard to scare his congregation. He wants to change their mind, but at the same time he shows them pity. He shows pity by saying he believes they can change. All the congregation needs is for Jonathan Edwards to believe they can change and repent. He wants the congregation to try harder in the things they do.
