Cars on Different surfaces
Aim: to find out whether the distance travelled by the wooden toy truck with a height of the tilt of the plank being (70cm) goes a further distance on different surfaces e.g. grass, concrete.
Hypothesis: The wooden truck will go furthest down the wooden plank on the ‘surface’ tiles.
Equipment:
1. (160cm) wooden plank
2. 2 Kg wooden toy truck
3. Surfaces e.g. wood, grass, concrete, dirt, carpet, tiles, rocks
4. Tape measure
5. Camera
6. A recording book
Method:
1. Gather all together your equipment needed for the experiment- (160cm) wooden plank, 2 Kg wooden toy truck, Surfaces e.g. wood, grass, concrete, dirt, carpet, tiles, rocks, tape measure, Camera, a recording book.
2. Choose the surface you wish to use first (Wood, grass, concrete, dirt, carpet, tiles, rocks)
3. Lean the (160cm) long wooden plank (70cm) above the ground.
4. Make sure throughout this experiment that you are recording what you are doing whether it is on paper or using a camera or however you would like.
5. Put the wooden truck, so that the back wheels are at the very top of the wooden plank.
6. Let go of the truck and it will move down the wooden plank supposably all the way down the plank and onto the surface that you have chosen to use.
7. When the wooden truck stops moving, then get your tape measure and measure the distance from the bottom/end of the wooden plank to the back wheels of the wooden truck.
8. Once you have done this record in (cm) the distance travelled.
9. Repeat this activity on the same surface 20 times recording each time and then find the average for the surface you have chosen to do.
10. Once you have finished the first surface 20 times repeat it on the next surface you have chosen and do the exact same thing as the last surface you did.
11. Repeat all of this for all 6 surfaces.

Independent variable: the single factor that is being changed in this experiment the different surfaces that are being measured on e.g. tiles, carpet, and concrete.
Dependent variable: In this experiment the distance the wooden truck goes past from the end of the wooden plank (160cm) to the two back wooden tires of the wooden truck is what you are measuring on each surface in all the experiments.
Variables held constant: the variables that you will be keeping the same are, the size of the wooden plank (160cm), the height from the ground that the wooden plank tilts at (70cm), also make sure you use the same wooden truck for each time, make sure you use all the exact same equipment for all the surfaces as well. Also need to make sure you record each surface 20 times each.
Risk assessment: there are not many ricks to be assessed in this experiment, but there might be a few small things like accidently trip over the wooden plank of wood or damage something around you when the truck goes down the wooden plank and it might hit something if its accidently in the way, but other than that there isn’t really any major concerning risks in this experiment.
Results: As was predicted the tiles went the furthest then wood and carpet coming second and third in distance. Here are the results of the experiment:
