The stories of the Yellow Wallpaper and Story of an Hour are both stories that have deep meaning, and many hidden symbols. In both stories there is a woman who in some way is oppressed by some outside force and must find a way to overcome this oppression. While in both stories the main charcter goes through a different ordeal, The main theme behind these events are the same and the two experiences can compare to eachother. the events match in both women we oppressed by men and portrayed as the weaker sex, both the woman find a way to cope with the situation, and both stories have a tragic and ironic ending. The first aspect both stories have in common is the fact that both of the women are oppressed by a man in their life.“The Yellow A kind intention or a cruel intention made the act seem no less a crime..."(Chopin) She can finally live life for her and not some one else. The final aspect the two stories have in common is the fact that both end in a very ironic manner. In The Yellow Wallpaper as the story nears conclusion Jane begin to tear the wallpaper off the wall, thus breaking down her prision. hearing the comition John comes upstairs to see the room in shambles. upon his questioning of Jane he is not able to contorl her. she begins to question her state, in a panic john faintsand Jane walks otu of the room. "In this one brief moment, Jane (and her own Order) triumphs, in the sense that she overturns or literally walks all over the Order that John represents, the Order that did nothing but oppress her."(Suess pg.89) This is simbolic in two ways first is she was able to defeat her oppressor, being from the weaker sex and secondly it was the man that in this instance showed weakness and fainted. The Irony of the end is as Jane walks off, John her oppressor is now in the room where she had just been imprisoned. In The Story an Hour the ending is quite different. As mentioned before Mrs. Mallard had just come to the realization that she was now free and could live life for herself. As the story concludes the husband who she thought was dead returns home. In shock Mrs. Mallard has heart failure. The doctors, "they said she had died of

What appeared to be a mere, contrite story to many readers, was actually…
