Article Analysis of Who is Responsible for Obesity

In his article “Obesity: Who is Responsible for Our Weight?”Bradly Balko tries to convince his readers that obese people are responsible for their weight ploblems. He uses moral arguments related to the governments rights to interfere in people’s private lives. He uses pathos to convince the people to feel angry about the government interfering with their food. Finally he uses logic to give reasons for his argument. All of the techniques are effective in making his case. Bradley Balko is a graduate from Indian University with the degree of journalism. .Balko is a policy analyst with Cato Institute which is” a conservative think tank” (Balko). He characterize himself like as libertarian .these means that he believes that the government should not interferes in people’s private life. Balko argues that weight is a personal issue that should not be controlled by the government. The audience for this article are readers of Time Magazine. People who would agree with the article are conservative people who believe the role of government has no right to be involved in personal lives. If the government makes more laws about obese people, Americans would not have personal freedom at all. He used logos to appeal to the conservatives who are reading the article. He makes logical arguments to suggest that if we let the government interfere with the obesity issued, it would lead the government to be able to interfere even more in our personal lives. He used the logic” if, then “convince the readers that taking the liberty of food choice would change the world and take our liberty. Part of his logic is to use examples of laws that were already passed that banned school vending machines.

Balko uses the rhetorical device of pathos and emotional reasoning. He makes the readers get angry because he liead them to think that they would not be able to eat fast food or any sugary beverages anymore if the government makes more laws that about what we kind eat. He also used fear of social media to convince the audience to take his side. Balko used ethos to convise his readers that is moral wrong for the government to take away are individeule way of liberty. This is based his opinion one only about one fact that different states and the federal government have already passed laws “that would bring the government between you and your waistline” (Balko).For example he states that some states are now banning snacks and sodas from school vending machines.
