Selecting a Windows 7 Edition
When considering the variety of factors that have been presented in the scenario, there are a few things that would prompt my decision. When considering the version of Windows 7 that I would use for this project, I would likely choose Windows 7 Professional. The reasoning for this is due to the capability of Windows 7 Professional to create a Network-Based Backup, as well as the length of Product Support at 10 years as compared to only 5 years for other versions of Windows 7. Also, it offers the option of File Encryption, and the ability to use Active Directory. Using Active Directory with the Windows Server 2003 server can really help with keeping the files on the file server secure, and having the Folder Redirection and Offline Files capabilities that are offered with Windows 7 Professional as compared to lower level versions of Windows 7 would allow better access to the computers contained in the warehouse area.
When considering the differences between doing a fresh install of Windows 7 as compared to an upgrade, you would actually be required to do a fresh install because Windows 7 does not offer a direct update path from Windows XP without first updating to Windows Vista. The only option available would be to perform a fresh install of Windows 7 and use the Data Migration option to transition the user data from the Windows XP
