10 May 2013 Amnesia Amnesia is known as forgetfulness and memory loss. Amnesia can affect not onlt the one person, but all of the others around them. “Pathological absence, impairment or loss of memory is associated with several mental disorders, but is also a characteristic feature of disease or damage of the brain.” (DSM). Amnesia is not just from age or heretical descendant, there are different types of amnesia such as, amnestic hangover, coital amnesia, Dissociative Amnesia, paramnesia, posttraumatic amnesia, pretraumatic amnesia, retrograde amnesia, and transient global amnesia (DSM). We will focus on just the basic disorder of amnesia. “Memory loss (amnesia) is unusual forgetfulness. You may not be able to remember new events, recall one or more memories of the past, or both.” (Google). Amnesia can be memory loss from your past or very recent memory. This can affect daily routines and schedules forcing you to be in a medical home or have an at home nurse. If you have long-term memory loss you may forget your family members and friends from your past causing conflict in your relationships. In order to help amnesia you can have tests done to see whether it is mild or severe, this will effect treatment, with mild memory loss you would have cognitive therapy and see a speech therapist. It is important to keep them calm, talk with them, and make daily tasks easy. This will help with the memory loss (Home Care). A popular example would be in, “The Notebook” by Nicholas Sparks, where the husband of many years reads stories of him and his wife, who has severe memory loss, to help spark her memory to remember him. Through out the movie he keeps her calm and talks with her. In the end she remembers him, but only for a moment and she falls back into her amnesia. He is satisfied even with this little beacon of hope. Even through troubled times God is always with us. Christians often forget this and there is no harm in reminding one another of this wonderful father that is always in troubles. In Philippians 4:6 it says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” This helps remind that when there are family
