October 10, 2013 Age, Crime and Responsibility
The society we live in the US is a very open minded and democratic one. In a society where all mean and women are treated equally, where everybody has the same freedom, laws they have to live by and consequences for breaking a law. Following this logic one can infer that no matter what age an individual, all citizens are seen as equal under the law. But in concerns of children and teens is where the law is blurred and brings controversial topics to debate. The government has tried to best qualify the age at where a person is at an age where they no longer are considered minors, but adults. But then there are special cases where a minor commits crimes most commonly committed by adults, and creates issues and concerns when a court of law tries to give a punishment. At any age an individual should be held responsible for whatever crime committed, if a minor, parents should also be held responsible. Being a firm believer in equality and treating everyone the same, within reason. At any age a person should be held responsible for any crime they have committed. The sentencing of the crime itself should depend more of the age, mental state and how mature the minor is. It would not be reasonable to give a minor at the age of ten years old the same punishment an adult would be given. A person at the age of ten is not seen as mature and capable of thinking and making the same decisions as an adult would. But this reason of age alone would not fully justify letting a minor without punishment, as they have done something against the law. Some kind of consequence must be sentenced by a court of law. The punishment sentenced for a minor should be based off the seriousness of the crime and the outcome in the end. If a minor commits a crime along the lines of rape, murder, and armed robbery, they should be tried as adults in court of law. Just as adults, a minor knows the difference between right and wrong. By the time kids are in elementary school they all know right from wrong to a certain degree. Crimes as the ones listed are all taught by society that they are morally wrong, and an action one should not do. From the age one becomes old enough to comprehend between right from wrong, a minor by using process of elimination should be able to comprehend what they should and should not do. A minor is taught
injustices and oppressive bureaucracy of Brooklyn College. Though Martin Luther King Jr. discusses injustice within the government, I believe it relates to the injustices I am experiencing firsthand within the institution of Brooklyn College. This is my first semester at Brooklyn College. A transfer student from the University of Vermont, I am not unfamiliar with on-campus activism, as I participated in many activist events when I lived in Burlington. I participated in some rallies here in Brooklyn, however…
an economically and morally fulfilling occupation. Becoming a lawyer is a long process that takes a phenomenal amount of work that needs to be done. Gaining an understanding of the complex nature of a number of laws is a tremendous amount of work in itself, but being able to apply these laws to on-the-job experiences is the tough part. Also, each case poses its own unique challenges. One must be mentally locked in, but must also find a way to not let emotions get in the way. Being able to mask human…

between breaking unjust laws and obeying just laws. He talks about the difference between just and unjust laws and when it is morally right to breaks these unjust laws. King used direct action to bring attention to the community that negotiation needed to take place, in turn king got locked up for non violent action. Martin Luther King Jr. used St. Thomas Aquinas’, “An unjust law is a human law that is not rooted in eternal law and natural law” to describe how these different laws work and how they are…
Functions of Law LAW/421 January 7, 2014 Functions of Law The functions and roles of law in society and business are important for many reasons; Society and business need laws to properly perform and run efficiently. Laws help businesses and society work together to create a fair and equal place to live and work. Without laws in businesses and society people would have free rein. Can you imagine what a person or business could do with no laws to follow it would be…

this in mind I am going to share my personal philosophy. Metaphysics This universe, that we call ours was created and is ran by a series of natural laws. Natural laws are predictable and universal ways reality works. I believe that natural laws are governed by a divine power. The divine power that guides our universe is better known as God. I believe that God designed natural laws so that the universe will operate the way that it does. God is also bound by the same natural laws we are, but He…
were banned or regulated in the 1700’s? Most likely we would be having tea and crumpets while we sang “God Save the Queen.” Fortunately, things did not happen that way at all. I will enjoy my beer and pizza and sing “The Star Spangled Banner.” I am a proud American who is grateful for the sacrifices that were given to ensure that I have the rights and freedoms that I do today. I served thirteen years in the United States Army ready to defend and die to preserve those very rights and freedoms…
