1. The narrator is Alice Walker. She has two daughters and talks about her and her daughter’s lives. She is a large, big-boned women with rough, man-working hands who never had an education. She was born in Georgia and lived in a rural area. By the way they treat each other and the way they act. 2. Maggie and Dee are two sisters born to the same mother but have resulted in a complete difference between the two. The two are different physically because Maggie has a thin body figure, and her arms and legs are scarred from the house fire. Dee is much prettier than Maggie. Dee is lighter than Maggie, with nicer hair and a fuller figure. They are different mentally because Maggie has a very shy personality because of the burn scars on her body. Dee has an outgoing personality, and always gets what she wants. Their lives have been different because Maggie lives at home and is protected by Mama, remaining virtually untouched by the outside world. Dee is the total opposite of Maggie and steps out into the world and goes to college. 3. Dee had changed her name to Wangero After going away to college; Dee creates a new life for herself and tries to create a new identity. She changes her name to relate with her African heritage and to leave behind the name the white slave owners gave the Africans.
