Analyses: The misery of Juan and Maria, two mestizos from Guayaquil, with scenes of prostitution, theft, sickness, administrative corruption, lack of work or work that is hard and underpaid, abuses and violence. The first few chapters take place in New York: the depression, workers’ protests disbanded beneath the blows of the police, contraband. Society is badly constructed, as much in Guayaquil as in New York, and the poor worker has no escape.

Alfredo Pereja Diezcanseco was a prominent Ecuadorian novelist, essayist, journalist, historian and diplomat whose literary works main focus involved improper treatment of the lower and working classes of Ecuador and America. Born October 12th, 1908 in Guayaquil, Ecuador to Fernando Pereja y Pareja and Amalia Diez- Canseco y Coloma. Overall he had a steady and relatively normal upbringing.
His mother was the daughter of former Peruvian President Francisco Diez Canseco y Corbacho therefore the family never really struggled financially. Pareja started supporting his family at age fourteen. He read at night and assisted as a listener at the Colegio Vincente Rocafuerte a school in Ecuador. His early education was achieved in his hometown at Colegio San Luis Gonzaga of the Christian Brothers. In 1929 and 1930, Parja went on an adventure in the United States. He worked on the New York City docks for a year due to the Great Depression. His novel El Muelle reflects the experiences he had during this time. He traveled back to Ecuador and became a professor of history and of Spanish American literature at Universidad Laica Rocafuerte de Guayaquil. He also served as a Superintendent of Secondary Education and as a Deputy of Guayas Province. In 1934 he married his cousin, Mercedes Cucalón Concha, the niece of Carlos Concha Torres with whom he had three children, Cecilia, Jorge, and Francisco. While Ecuador was under the dictatorship of Federico Páez, Pareja was imprisoned and ultimately exiled to Chile where he was employed by the Ercilla Publishing House. He returned to Ecuador and
