Introduction
In the roaring twenties Chicago was synonymous with corruption. Wild night life, flowing booze, and a ton of crimes. When Prohibition became the law in January of 1920 it was a special invitation for twenty year old Alphonse Gabriel “Al Scarface” Capone. To scheme, move in, take over, & to kill anyone who got in his way. “Al Capone known as Scarface influences are widely known from the awful brutality things he did, to some of the generosity things that he did for the society.”
[Early Childhood]Gabriele and Teresa Capone his parents had nine children they wanted a better life for each an one of their children so when Al was 5 Gabriele & Teresa took their family & immigrated to the United States, first emigrating from Italy to Fiume, Austria-Hungary traveling on a ship to the U.S., and finally settled at 95 Navy Street, in the Navy Yard section of downtown Brooklyn. When Al was 11, the Capone family moved to 38 Garfield Place in Park Slope, Brooklyn. They had fine parents but all of them grew up to be criminals. [How Al Capone got the nickname “Scarface”] In 1917 at the age of 18 when Al worked for a fellow named “Frankie Yale” at a Brooklyn night club (as a bouncer/waiter) called the Harvard Inn. Al had spotted a women named “Lena Gallucio” who he thought was good looking. While Lena was sitting at her table Al bent over & said loud enough so that the people at the next table spun around, surprised at the language which was strange, “Honey you got a nice derriere, & I mean that as a compliment really!” Not knowing she had a brother their “Frank Gallucio” defending his sister pulled out a knife & slashed the left side of Capone’s face. Giving the rise to the new nickname he hated “SCARFACE”. Scarface was ashamed of the scar, sometimes he would use powder to hide them, preferring to be photographed from the right side of his face & saying the scars was a result of war injures.
[How he got into the business] Scarface caught the eye of a sharp Brooklyn mobster, “Johnny Torrio” who became Scarface’s role model. Torrio moved to Chicago to run things for bootlegger “Big Jim Colosimo”. Big Jim controlled a string of gambling Bins & Brothel Houses. Torrio need a lieutenant with brains (Capone was actually a bright young man stated by Author “Luciano Forrizo”) so he recruited Scarface. At the age of 20 Scarface left for Chicago at the invitation of Johnny Torrio, who was imported by “Big Jim” as an enforcer. Capone began in Chicago as a bouncer in a brothel, where he contracted syphilis.
In the 1920s of January Prohibition became the law. Prohibition in the United States was a nationwide constitutional ban on the sale, production, importation, & transportation of alcoholic beverages that remained in place from 1920 to 1933. In the nineteenth & early twentieth centuries, the introduction of alcohol prohibition & its subsequent enforcement in law was a hotly debated issue. Prohibition supporters, called “Drys”, presented it as a victory for public morals & health. Anti-prohibitionists, known as wets, criticized the alcohol ban as an intrusion of mainly rural Protestant ideals on a central aspect of urban, immigrant, & Catholic life. Though popular opinion believes that Prohibition failed, it succeeded in cutting overall alcohol consumption in half during the 1920s, & consumption remained below pre-Prohibition levels until the 1940s. Scarface knew who wasn’t going to stop drinking & this opened up a new opportunity for him. When Prohibition went into effect in 1920, Torrio went into effect, making all manufacture, purchase, or sale of alcoholic beverages illegal. Torrio immediately realized the immense profits bootlegging could bring and urged “Big Jim” to enter the business. Colosimo stubbornly refused, fearing that expansion into other rackets would only draw more attention from the police and rival gangs pushed for the gang to enter into bootlegging. Torrio realized that Colosimo was a serious impediment to the
