Guillaume Ansart, in his review of Raynal and Diderot’s original work, describes the two French philosophes as taking Baron de Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws, described as works to argue relationships, society, tradition and social institutions. Raynal’s small contributions and Diderot’s original work was derived of Montesquieu and further contributed to the compilation of Histoire des deux Indes. Ansart’s review and dissection of these works gives a greater understanding of how perceptions, naiveté’ and admiration of the Americas formed the world impression of the American Revolution, the new republic and nationalism.

The author described Capitalism and how it is a political and economic system through which the countries trade and industry are controlled by private owners. Capitalism brought banks as institutions which allowed for creating capital. By producing new money people were able to invest in new ideas, including industrial production. This industrial production helped to facilitate transportation progression. Capitalism and the development of transportation go hand in hand because it was due to the transportation progression that capitalism was able to spread. The author explains how transportation expansion helped play a role in changing the mode of production that began to bring out the use of machines in factories to produce goods. Industrialism then began to mainstream in textile mills.
