Questions:
1. Summarize the story the first witch tells. She explains how she asked a sailor’s wife for chestnuts and she told the witch to go away so she got very angered.
2. What do the witches plan in revenge? The witches plan to make Macbeth’s life miserable.
3. Why is Banquo confused by the witches when he first sees them? (What questions does he ask?) He is confused because they are so ugly and he has never seen stating, “That look not like the inhabitants o’ the earth, And yet are on’t? Live you?...”
4. When the witches first speak to Macbeth and Banquo what do they say? (Quote) They say things like, “All hail, Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis!” They continue to chant these things only towards Macbeth.
5. What do they prophesy for Banquo? They prophesy for Banquo is that he will have children that become kings.
6. Why is Macbeth, Thane of Galmis, confused by the witches’ prophecies? He is confused because he believes the Thane of Cawdor is still holding his position because he is a, “prosperous gentleman…” and to become king.
7. Why have Ross and Angus come? What message are they there to deliver? Ross and Angus have come to deliver Macbeth to the king and to give him his new title as a thank you for his bravery.
8. What does Macbeth mean when he says “Why do you address me in borrowed robes”? He asks this because he means that that is someone else’s title and it does not belong to him.
9. What is Angus’ response/reason? He responds that The Thane is not deserving of that title anymore and should be killed and Macbeth can take it for his noble deeds.
10. What does Macbeth mean by “the greatest is behind”? He means that a much greater person has yet to rise.
11. In lines 127-129, Macbeth says “Two truths are told /as happy prologues to the swelling Act / Of the imperial theme.” What “imperial theme” is he talking about? He is talking about him becoming king of Scotland.
12. In the quoted lines above, what are the “happy prologues”? The happy prologues are the news that the witches have told him which are true.
13. What is an “aside”? An aside is a character’s emotions, thoughts, inner feelings that is shared with the audience and only intended for the audience.
14. In Macbeth’s aside, (lines 130-142), what problems does Macbeth mention? What does he decide to do about his issue (lines 143-144)? Macbeth mentions that he is now having ideas of murdering the king to receive that title. Then he reflects and realizes that that is not the person he is and if it is meant to happen, it will.
