ACC350: Internal Reporting
A Process for Solving Cases and Unstructured Problems

The following steps are intended to provide students as guidance for students solving cases. Addressing each of the items listed is important; however, every case is unique so simply responding to each point won’t necessarily result in a good case solution.

I. The Situation: Identify and define the problem(s): What decisions need to be made? What are the facts? What are the goals? What are the limitations or constraints?

II. The Alternatives: Identify feasible alternatives or options: What are the pros and cons of each alternative? Can you rank the alternatives in order of “goodness”? Do so. Should anything else be considered? What additional information is needed? What assumptions are you making?

III. The Recommendations: Choose a course of action
What should be done and why? What logical reasons support your choice?

IV. The Consequences: Identify possible effects of your choice.
What are the positive and negative implications of your chosen action?
Who will benefit? Who will loose? Who might be hurt?
What are the risks?
What will you do if it doesn’t work?
