Executive Summary

There are many different areas of Accounting that someone may pursue for their career. An Accountant can specialize in any of these regions, or even many at a time. One of the more prestigious placements in the field is the Accounting Manager or Accounting Supervisor title. This position is an intense managerial job that requires a person who is able to work in any area of the Accounting field.

Being an Accounting Manager is very challenging. One must have diligence and a high attention to detail in order to keep up with the demands of this position. An Accounting Manager must maintain superior ethical standards while displaying professional interpersonal skills within their team and when dealing with clients.

The Accounting Manager position is a job in high demand and with immense responsibilities, resulting in a high salary. They are held responsible for all the members and all the work produced in their team, so the high wage is rewarding against the challenges Accounting Managers face on a daily basis.

Furthermore, the accounting industry is merging its three classifications into the one Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). Whilst this merge is happening the three prior associations still post to their websites regarding conferences, peer support and current articles, however they refer to the new CPA website for prospective students.

Introduction

This report was commissioned by the Business Communications 2200 team to assist accounting students to make an educated career decision. This report focuses on the Accounting Manager position as requested by Derek Jamensky, the Communications Lab Instructor. Included in the report is an overview of the job position including typical employers, duties and specializations. The career path will be explored including educational certifications and work experience leading up to the position and what is the next step beyond the position. This information was gleaned from searching job sites and job postings.

For current students, the job market for this position was explored with online job sites such as Indeed.com. The job market was compared between provinces and salary ranges. The job adverts were also analyzed for the most and least common skill requirements.

Networking is an important factor when pursuing or maintaining a job, so the professional associations, conference and publications were reported to enable students to get a head start in what to read and apply for.

Due to time constraints Work satisfaction and the corresponding work-life balance was not explored. Because the current market is unstable, the future of the industry was also left out as we did not want to mislead current and future students.
