The Difference in Competences between Nurses Prepared at Associate Level Nursing VS. Baccalaureate Level Nursing
Nursing is complex, ever changing, and multi focused. It defines as unique profession that is both art and science. It has specialized education requirement with theoretical and clinical components. [American nurses association]. In this paper will discuss difference between baccalaureate level nursing and associate level nursing. Will also use patient care situation to discuss how nursing care to making decision is different base upon education.
Associate Nursing was found in 1956 (Friberg, 2011). ADN degree can be gained by 2-3 years of education at hospitals or community college. A graduate from this program will be eligible to take NCLEX Examination. Associate of science in nursing prepare nurses to deliver direct patient care and treatment. It is fast way to get in to the nursing field.
A Bachelor of Science nursing was found in 1946. (Friberg, 2011). The Bachelor of Science nursing can be obtain in 4 years of education at universities and senior collage. Same as ASN A graduate from this program will be eligible to take NCLEX Examination. Bachelor of Science in nursing prepare nurse to deliver high level of care to patient with quality of leadership, case management, nurse executives, and critical thinking.
BSN program include all the course which taught in diploma and associate degree program. Registered nurse with a BSN opens wide opportunities to advance their careers. For an example, a bachelor’s in nursing needed to pursue in to a master’s in nursing program, which can open career opportunities such as health care administration, or specialty nursing roles like nurse anesthetist, nurse practitioner, and clinical nurse leader. ("Exercise science guide," 2015) Higher education improve nurse’s professional growth, and prepare them for function well in today’s evolving health care environment.
The article which is published in 2013 Issue of health affairs, by Nurse Researcher Ann Kutney-Lee and Colleagues noticed that a 10-points increase in nurses who is holding a Baccalaureate degree nursing in hospital units was connected with reduction of average 2.12 death for every 1000 patient and for large group of patient with complication an average reduction of death was 7.47 per 1000 patients. (Kutney, 2013,).
One more study published in 2014. Issue of medical care by Olga Yakusheva and colleague showed that 10% of increase in amount of nurses who earned bachelor degree in hospital was connected with cutting down the odds of patient mortality by 10.9%. Study also found that increase the amount of care provided by baccalaureate prepared nurses would result in lowering rates of re-admission and shorter length of hospitalization. (Yakusheva O, 2014)
In patient care situation a known Female with diabetes reported with low blood sugar in early morning who received long acting insulin ordered by Doctor last night and refuse to eat late night snack. The associate nurse might give patient juice or milk, repeat blood sugar, and continue to medicate patient, while Bachelor nurse may assess patient and will try to find cause and fix the cause of problem and will provide education to patient.
The point is associates degree nurses are practicing restricted level of care
