Supporters in the 17th century were characterized by higher social ranks, and religions of absolution. The supporters justified their absolution by supporting their absolutist rule. There was a major criticism behind the government because with the absolution power it took power away from the government. Henry IV was a protestant who converted to Catholic, because when he became King no one would listen to him. Jacques reached the people by his preaching of sermons. Peter the Great was a major traveler to Europe to learn then tries to get Russia in line with Europe. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke believed if the monarchy was without “sovereign authority invested with absolute power, the human society would be a wreck.” (page 265) They all expressed their way of using absolution in many different ways through the period of the 17th century. The supporters justified their absolution by supporting their absolutist rule. Henry IV said, “one king, one person, one faith.” Saying there only needs to be a king no government with a lot of people, and one faith so there would be more power for Henry because if he had two religions and picked a side the other side would be mad and want him off the throne. Though the preaching’s of Jacques he quoted “Is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil.” (page 255) If you obey the preacher and laws then God will prepare a place for you, but if you do not obey them you will be before evil when you die. Peter the Great desired to modernize Russia so he built and moved the capital to St. Petersburg. Thomas Hobbes argued that individuals voluntarily give up their
