A6 Communications Profile Assignment

This course will require you to communicate in a variety of contexts and formats. Public speaking in the digital age we live means not only speaking to a group of people in a live setting, but you will also need to communicate in other contexts as well.

We will use a variety of programs and methods in order to interact with one another. I will guide you through how to use each of these tools as the course progresses. For now, it is important that you set up profiles on each of the accounts that we will be using so that you can quickly interact with your peers. Please complete the following steps and then click on the title of this page and submit the information in the drop box provided.

STEP 1

Log into your Odessa College email account and email me at jramsey@odessa.edu after you email me. I will provide you a code word when I reply. Please write that code word down. You will send it back to me when you submit this assignment.

STEP 2

Go to Twitter and designate or create a profile for this class. You may use an existing twitter account if you wish but we are going to be tweeting about a lot of things that will not make much sense to your other followers. Also, you need to interact with others including me through this profile which may not make it the best choice in terms of privacy for your existing information. I strongly suggest that you create an account specifically for this class. You may upload a modest picture of your profile or use a cartoon character or other photo if you do not want to be public. You do not need to enter personal identifying information nor do you need to use your real name. Simply create a profile that you are comfortable sharing with others and be discreet about what you tweet. This is to be a note taking and class interaction account not a personal account. Put some kind of picture in your profile but it does not have to be one of your face if you would rather put something up like a cartoon character or nature photography. Please do be creative and fun but do not put your personal identity or personal information at risk . The following link will show you how to create a twitter profile if you do not how to do so already: http://youtu.be/zkWL985S95E

If you are a dual credit student or a minor, or if you are just protective of your privacy, you are NOT required to make your profiles public. There is an option with twitter to make your profile secure you will see a little lock next to your name. This does mean you will need to approve class members when they go to connect to you on twitter or follow you but I highly recommend this option for minors just make sure your classmates and I can see you. Also when tweeting for this class please do not use this as personal profile. This is a learning profile. Until you know twitter well enough to be comfortable please do not disclose information on your full name or where you live or your comings and goings. I want everyone to have a safe experience on this. You may visit with one another and make comments but just be aware of your privacy and be careful what details you put out there.

Don’t let Twitter Freak you out. It is a bit strange at first. I will show you what we are going to do with it and you will become more comfortable.

STEP 3:

Go to the class Discussion Board and create a thread make your name the title. Do NOT title it Introduction as your classmates will use this thread to find your posts. On the first post introduce yourself to your classmates. Attach a modest picture of yourself and tell them. The Discoussion Board can be accessed by following the link to it in the menu bar on the left. Click on "Create Thread" and title the thread by your name DO NOT TITLE it INTRODUCTION. Title it with your first name and last initial. Remember what you say here will be visible to the entire class.
