Introduction
Smartphones, one of the newest forms of technology we use today, but ten years ago if someone said the word smartphone no one would have known what they were talking about. In todays society smartphones are key in the development of technology. Two of the best producers of smart phones are Apple and Android. These companies never ceases to amaze the world with all of their high technology gadgets and incredibly efficient services. However, the newest product from Apple, iPhone5, may have no competitors. The question now is, can any other smartphone compete with Apples iPhone5? The answer is maybe.
Main Information
Peter Buckley, author of, The Rough Guide to the iPhone, says it best.
“These iPhone competitors are made by lots of different companies, but most of them use the same underlying software – a system called Android, produced by online giant Google. Android phones vary a lot in terms of price and quality – and the degree to which the phone manufacturer customizes the software. Whether you choose the iPhone or Android phone is really down to personal preference.” (Buckley, 2010)
The new Galaxy S III might be the smart phone to give the iPhone5 a run for its’ money. Each phone possesses the top of the line technology, web browsing, endless applications, and each phone is their services best product.
The Galaxy S III is the newest device from Android. This smartphone achieved 20 million sales in just 100 days, and it has since matched the number of Galaxy S2 handsets sold despite being in the market for a shorter period of time. In September 2012, the iPhone5 broke records by making it the fastest-selling phone of all time. It sold 5 million units in the first weekend. In the year 2012, AT&T sold 5.1 million smartphones, which means only 1.4 million phones were non-iPhones, such as Android. However, “Sales of Android devices actually topped the iPhone, with Verizon selling 2.9 million Android devices during the quarter.” (Albanesius, 2012)
AT&T now holds 43 million smartphone subscribers. Since both companies release of their first smartphone the world has changed. Today people expect reliable Internet connections, fast Internet connection, and huge touchscreen phones that are easily hand held.
The difference between the iPhone5 and the Galaxy S III is very minimal. The biggest difference with each phone is its appearance. If having a bigger screen and having as much space as possible is important than the Galaxy is the way to go. However, depending on what the consumers essentials are for their phone can deter what phone that consumer will buy. If NFC is a necessity than the iPhone5 is definitely the phone for you. The iPhone is multiple devices wrapped up in one. Instead of buying an iPod, a camera and a phone separately it is cost effective and is all contained in one device. So if taking pictures and videos is of high importance, than the iPhone5 will best suit your needs. With that being said, nothing in technology is perfect. Both phones have their faults and limitations. Replacements for the iPhone cost significantly more than other smart phones. Also, the improvements made from the 4s to the 5 are so minimal the cost to some might not be worth it. In 2012 AT&T upgrade fee increased to $36 per year. All of these factors explain modern society unhealthy obsession with brand-name goods and technological gadgets. Phones | Sales | Profit | iPhone5 | 100M | 50M | Galaxy XIII | 75M | 25M |
