A Raisin in the Sun

A Raisin in the Sun is a story portraying the life of the Younger family. The Younger family is a black family living on the South Side of Chicago in the 1950’s. After the death of there father, the family receives an insurance policy of $10,000. This is the beginning of a family’s fight to find their way in life. This fight will lead them to realize what is most important in life. The mother in the story is a strong willed but loving and nurturing to her children. She only has the best wishes for her family. As with most African American families of today, the mother or the grandmother is the backbone and quite often are in control of their family.
As portrayed in the story, the average African American male is in a continued struggle to take care of their family and do well to support them selves. Often having less education and lower paying wages they will do whatever is necessary to make sure their family is taken care of. Often there plans do not always workout for their family however, they continue to try to come up with ways allowing them to live a more comfortable life. The family are often against this type of behavior, knowing it will hurt them, but they try to do so without hurting the males.
When there are siblings involved in the family’s future the sister is usually more academically driven than the brother simply because the bothers main concern is his family, more often overlooking educations as it does not have immediate results. There is always friction between
