For this paper, I have decided to compare two Hitchcock films. Ever since I can remember, I have seen Alfred Hitchcock films; Psycho, The Birds, North by Northwest, I enjoy his work because I like the suspense, and visual effects that he was able to accomplish. Out of all of his films, I believe that my favorite Hitchcock films would have to be Rear Window (1954) and Vertigo (1958), because I think that the two incorporate everything that is “Alfred Hitchcock”. Hitchcock films are known for being mysterious, cynical, as well as suspenseful and they are all similar because of his use of symbolism, light, repetitive actors, and repetition of theme.

Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock was born on August 13, 1899 in London England. He began

Vertigo is another film by Alfred Hitchcock that delves into suspense and mystery, but it is more artistic than Rear Window. Vertigo, now known as one of the top films of all time, was dismissed by its audience upon its initial release in 1958. This is almost impossible to agree with because of the near perfect execution of the film, but it can be understood. Vertigo stars James Stewart, once again, as a troubled man who acts on impulsive decisions driven by a woman. The film is about John Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart), a dismissed detective because of his fear of heights, and his quest to figure out the truth behind a woman, Madeline (Kim Novak), that he became obsessed with. Scottie, was hired by one of his friends in order to investigate his wife Madeline because he feared that she was going crazy and that she may kill herself. After spending many days trying to figure out what was wrong with Madeline, Scottie drives with Madeline to an old church where she climbs up the to the steeple and jumps off. Because of his fear of heights, Scottie is unable to save her and feels as though it is his fault that she died, because he could not face his fear. Scottie becomes depressed until he sees a woman one day that looks exactly like Madeline, her name is Judy.
