Designing a Research Strategy
1) Choose a subject and explore it through Preliminary Research How has product design influence goal line technology? 2) Construct your Lead Question – focus, narrow it down, keep researching Has product design used new technology to change the sports in industry, with particular reference to goal line technology?

3) Devise a Research Strategy – it gives direction to your research and it evolves How do you start? Outline your chapters – apply what you know + future expectations Introduction Ch1 – In the first paragraph I intend to give a brief history (from the 60s onwards) on the footballing industry, and how goal line technology could have helped the footballing game. I would also like old football managers to give their own views on goal line technology and how it has developed over a certain amount of time. Inn addition it would be good to see the FA polices on why that haven’t already introduced it in football yet. Ch2 – I believe the second paragraph should involve what goal line technology is, and also all the new software that is being used to benefit this sport, this would give the reader a good idea on what this design software actually does. Discussing advantages and also disadvantages from a footballing point of view. This paragraph could involve some prime research such as the officials in the game (referees and linesmen lineswomen) on how they feel in will benefit and also cause disadvantages to the game. This could be recorded through an interview. Ch3 – In paragraph three, I feel it would be good to allow the reader to get an understanding on how goal line technology is used in other sports. Sport such as rugby, tennis, and cricket. Why have these sports, which are well known as not being as popular as footballs is having technology like this. Does it work, and is it useful to the sport that it is

involved in? Could go into some research on officials and players who play these games, to basically get an opinion on how they believe it works. Ch4 – This paragraph could be about international football perspective of goal line technology. As being the highest stake and step up in football does it deserve to have this kind of smart technology, as everyone wants the right decisions to be made in this sport. Also to understand why it has not been used yet? I also would like to discuss the issue of money, is this the reason why it has not been used? Plus is the current technology being tested well enough for it to be brought forward to the current game in play. Conclusion Overall to conclude this essay I would like to give the most important aspect in football a voice, the fans themselves. Do they believe that this technology should be involved in the sport they love and enjoy watching every week? Or do they believe that it would just ruin the game and maybe slow it down to much? Your research strategy changes and evolves as you continue to research, and defines the structure and content of your dissertation.

4) Construct a Progress Map – it helps you to control the dissertation process. It also changes and evolves as you research. Progress Map: a documented record of key deadlines, experiences and decisions etc in notes or phrases marked on a calendar, diary or timeline. It is not an opportunity to write long journals or extended reflective essays. Keep to short notes recording key dates, decisions and changes that provide evidence of your progress and your time-management. At the start of the Level 3 Dissertation Unit you will be required to bring your dissertation tutor up-to-date with your research strategy and progress map. You must submit the first draft of your dissertation shortly after.
