Key Points of “After Twenty Years”
Use your own words. EVERY entry needs specific words from the text that prove your point. Don’t forget page numbers.
1. What is the exposition of the story?
“The policeman on the beat moved up the avenue impressively. The impressiveness was habitual and not for show, for spectators were few. The time was barely 10 o'clock at night, but chilly gusts of wind with a taste of rain in them had well-nigh depeopled the streets.”
2. Where and when does the story take place? How do you know?
It was ten o’clock at night, in front of a store, that used to be a restaurant.
“The time was barely 10 o’clock at night.”
“In the doorway of a darkened of a darkened hardware store a man leaned, with an unlighted cigar in his mouth.”
“About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands- `Big Joe` Brady’s restaurant.”
3. What do you know about the characters in the story?
More characters?
Jimmy
I can tell Jimmy takes his job as a policeman seriously because the writer says he was “trying doors as he went…to cast his watchful eye…” (21).
Bob
I think Bob is a little bit cocky. If he was on the run, then he should have been more cautious with who he was talking to. He also talked to a cop, which isn’t very smart if your wanted. He could have avoided the situation somehow.
I also think that he is collected. He doesn’t get nervous while talking to the cop.
Text for these: “It’s alright officer” “I’m just waiting for a friend.”
4. What is the main conflict of the story?
Will ______________________ __________________?
What am I supposed to do here? Fill in the blanks?
5. What actions build tension or create suspense and make up the rising actions of the story?
Whenever Bob finds out that the man isn’t jimmy. “You’re not Jimmy Wells.” “Twenty years is a long time, but not long to change a man’s nose from a Roman to a pug.”
Also, whenever Bob questions the man about his height. -. “I never thought you were so tall by two or three inches.”
5. What is the climax of the story? (When you know the answer to the Conflict question)
The climax of the story is whenever Bob gets arrested. – “It sometimes changes a good man into a bad
